Learn to Sail with UCSB Recreation!

Non-credit, recreational courses are available through UCSB Recreation's Gaucho R.E.C. Program.
Classes utilize RS Quest boats which are easy to maneuver and a provide a fun, enjoyable introduction to the world of sailing.

Westmont College students: You can take sailing classes for credit through Westmont. Look for these classes next time you register.

 

Sailing

Sailing: Learn to Sail
Sailors will learn the basics of rigging and sailing a boat including parts of the boat, points of sail, steering, tacking, gybing, weight placement and body movement, sail trim and sail control, and basic boat handling skills. Classes will be taught in RS Quest sailboats with 2-4 students per boat. Participants should be able to swim and are required to wear life jackets during the course. The goal of the class is to be able to sail to any nearby location in up to 12 knots of wind.

Sailing: Learn to Sail Intermediate
Build on the fundamentals of sailing you learned in our introductory course. The intermediate class will teach you how to manipulate the sail shape using sail controls, how to use a spinnaker, and also more advanced maneuvers like roll tacking and roll gybing.

BOATING AND SAILING DOCK - SB HARBOR

UCSB Recreation operates sailing & boating classes at the Santa Barbara Harbor as part of the Gaucho R.E.C. program.

The Sailing Facility is also home to the UCSB Sailing Team which is a sport club open to all UCSB Students.
