Joshua Tree National Park is immense and infinitely variable. Here, two desert ecosystems converge: the dry Colorado and the wetter Mojave. Joshua Tree National Park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres, enough space to allow these two distinct ecosystems to thrive at different altitudes. “JTree” is a hiker's and climber's dream with its mild climate and interesting rock formations, plants, birds and wildlife.
Joshua Tree Backpacking: Join us for clear skies, clean air, peace, tranquility, quietude and beauty only deserts offer. We will depart from UCSB and arrive in the evening to set up our base in Black Rock Campground. Then we will trek out from our trailhead into desert gardens of natural rock and explore canyons where bighorn sheep and golden eagles add an air of unconcerned majesty to the land. This is a longer intermediate backpacking experience so we recommend relatively good fitness and an eagerness to learn and share desert backpacking skills!
Fees include transportation, camping, permits, and all breakfasts and dinners while backpacking. You need to supply your own lunches, snacks, and personal gear which you will be responsible for carrying as well as a share of the group food, water and gear. Backpack, sleeping bag and tent rentals are available.
Joshua Tree Camping & Hiking: We will depart in the morning, arrive in the afternoon and set up our base where we will awake each morning to breakfast in the Wonderland of Rocks. During the evenings we can take short nature hikes, explore the unique geologic formations, listen to the sounds of the wild desert, and relax under the canopy of stars in the night sky. Each day we have the opportunity to trek nature walks and canyon oases, explore lost mines and old Western outlaw hideouts and summit the park’s peaks under bright sun and blue sky, where bighorn sheep and golden eagles add an air of unconcerned majesty to the land. Adventure beckons from sites and trails with names like Skull Rock, Lost Horse Mine, Ryan Mountain, Hidden Valley. We may even -- weather permitting-- gaze over the Salton Sea to distant Mexico. Come join us for clear skies, clean air, and the peace, tranquility, and beauty that only deserts offer.
